On January 1, 2024, the computing world lost Niklaus Wirth. To most people that name means nothing. To me it means the first time a machine did exactly what I told it to do, because the language he designed, Pascal, was the one I typed my very first program in. He did not just shape a field. He shaped the way I think.
A Swiss engineer with a quiet obsession
Wirth was born on February 15, 1934, in Winterthur, Switzerland. He studied at ETH Zurich and eventually came back to teach there, but his path ran through some of the most important addresses in computing along the way, including Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley. Wherever he worked, the same goal kept showing up in his work: build programming languages that are efficient, reliable, and genuinely easy to use. That last part sounds obvious now. In the 1960s and 70s, it was almost radical.
Pascal, or how a language taught a generation to think
Of everything he built, Pascal in the 1970s was probably the milestone. It was never meant to be just another tool for writing code. Wirth designed it to teach students structured programming, and its clarity, simplicity, and structure made it just as comfortable for a curious beginner as for a seasoned engineer. The languages that came afterward borrowed its bones, and you can still hear its ideas echoing through modern programming.
What made Pascal special was that it had opinions. It nudged you toward good habits and made sloppy structure feel wrong, which forced an entire generation of programmers to actually think about how their code was organized and designed rather than just whether it ran.
For me, Pascal was not only the first language I used, in Computer Science High School in 1983, compiling it on a Digital Equipment PDP 11/24. It was a gateway to the power and the beauty of coding, the revelation that quietly set the direction of my whole professional life.
Less is more, in code and in principle
Wirth never stopped after Pascal. Modula-2 and Oberon followed, and each one carried the same conviction: less is more. He treated simplicity not as a limitation but as the hardest and most valuable thing a designer can achieve. The wider world agreed. In 1984 he received the Turing Award, computing's highest honor, for his series of innovative programming languages.
I want to remember him not only as a brilliant computer scientist, but as a mentor and an inspiration, even if mine was an education he never knew he was giving. His legacy keeps running in every line of Pascal and in the languages descended from it, and in the minds of all of us who learned to code under his quiet, indirect tutelage.
